Familia Moja Newsletter - Oct to December 2011

By Wambui Muiru
Director/Founder of Familia Moja Children’s Home

It’s another month; the rains are still determined to give our land beauty. Having a family of thirty-one is quite an enormous task given the high cost of living… my my, the cost of maize (corn) flour has really risen and 20litres of cooking oil is now going for 3,800ksh (20% increase over the past year).

Read more about October/November as it happened. Enjoy your read!!!!

Yours sincerely,
Ms Wambui Muiru.

CHILDREN’S CONVENTION & CHILDREN’S RIGHTS FORUM – NYERI, CENTRAL PROVINCE

Ken Karuu who is at Morning Glory Academy class seven was chosen once again to be a member of the Kiambu County’s Children’s Parliament. He went for a three days seminar at Caritas Nyeri where over 200 children had gathered to charter a children’s convention and make a draft on what’s ailing the Central Province child.

The 50 members group from the children’s department, civil society and Charitable Children’s Institutions.

The children’s department, civil society and Charitable Children’s Institution representatives went to the same venue to write a paper of recommendations on the same. It was a convention that gave the stakeholders a chance to bring out into the open what happened at the grassroots level and advise the government on the best way forward. At the end of the four days at Caritas Nyeri, everyone was ready for a break and were glad for the opportunity to be the moral voice of the child in Central Province.

VISIT FROM MT KENYA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Mt Kenya University Campus in Thika paid a visit to the kids at Familia Moja and helped them with the Saturday afternoon chores.

Visits by older youths always encourages the kids to work hard and be like their big brother or sister in higher institutions of learning.

Thank you MKU for choosing Familia Moja!!!

VOLUNTEERS

Jacque Hogan visited us for about two weeks. She interacted with the kids and visited many corporates to solicit for assistance. Thank you Jacque.

At the airport to see Jacque off. It was the first time for Peter and Ruth to be at the airport. They were really happy. They were chosen as they were the best behaved class 8’s of the month.

CLASS EIGHT CHILDREN FINISH PRIMARY SCHOOL

All the kids finished school for the year on the 24th November. We are very proud especially of those who have finished primary school and are excited to start secondary school next year. Jacque baked yummy cakes for the kids to celebrate finishing their exams.

CLASS 8 NAIROBI ADVENTURES…

As a celebration of the class eight children finishing primary school, the boys and girls spent a few days in Nairobi with my brothers & sisters. They visited many attractions in Kenya such as Uhuru Park, Nairobi Museum, the snake park etc. This was a great opportunity for the older ones to spend some time by themselves and with my younger siblings before going away to secondary school in January.

BUILDING THE NEW HOME COMMENCES THIS WEEK!

We are excited to announce that laying the foundations for Familia Moja’s new and permanent home will commence this week. We have also recently submitted an application to Kenya Power to connect the land up to the electricity grid. These exciting steps mark the beginning of our biggest development project, which will include a visit from a group of 16 dedicated volunteers from Europe, Australia and New Zealand in early 2012.

We have raised close to AUD$50,000 towards the project, an incredible effort, however we are still a long way from the target of AUD$115,000 we need in order to finish the project. Where possible we aim to source all building materials locally and employ qualified local builders for the construction of our new home to ensure that the broader community benefits from this project as well. If you would like to make a contribute to the building project, you can make a donation to the following bank account:

They would like to thank all those who contributed to their fundraising efforts. You can see the full list of thank yous here Group Volunteer Project Thank Yous

CHRISTMAS

In two weeks, we’ll be celebrating Christmas and we’d love to be able to give the children some much needed gifts. If you would like to purchase a Christmas present for the kids, please review the wishlist here Familia Moja Wish List

PEOPLE & PLANET PARTNERSHIP UPDATE
Familia Moja’s partnership with People & Planet has been a great success and volunteers have been busy selling diaries and calendars filled with beautiful photographs to raise funds for the children’s centre. So far, they have sold over 550 calendars and diaries so a big thank you for all their hard work!

LIMITATIONS/CHALLENGES.

MONTHLY BUDGET

The cost of living in Kenya has risen sharply, which is making it difficult for us to meet our monthly budget.

If you wish to make a regular or a one-off donation please contact info@familiamoja.org for details on how you can do so.

NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE

We require a sponsor to cover our National Health Insurance Fund fees for the children; this covers our medical costs when the children are admitted to hospital.

If you wish to sponsor this it costs 39,600KSH per year (AUD$440, CHF415 and USD$465).

CHILD PROTECTION POLICY TRAINING

All the staff and children will undergo a refresher course in our Child Protection Policy. This is vital to the safety of our home so that all the staff and children are aware of our safety procedures.

If you wish to sponsor this it costs 5,000KSH per year (AUD$56, CHF53 and USD$59).
