Familia Moja Newsletter - May 2012

The Family Expands
This month we welcomed two new additions to the family; Aphline Adhiambo, the 6 year old niece of one of our oldest boys, David; along with 19-month-old Clara Wanjiku. Both are settling in well with Aphline back in class and Clara helping to keep Elizabeth and Virginia company while the kids are at school.

Staff Changes
We are pleased to welcome our new intern social worker Lillian to the fold. She is a student from Jomo Kenyatta University studying social work, who joined us at the beginning of the school holidays and spent the time building a relationship with the kids. Her main duties will be to spend one-on-one time with all of the children, to maintain the medical and education files and to assist with discipline. Wambui will mentor her closely over the 6 months of her internship.

We'd like to say farewell to Beatrice and a huge thank you for over the past couple of years of love and care for the children. She has been instrumental in helping to provide a stable home for the kids in addition to being a great support to Wambui. We wish her all the best in starting her own family.

Welcome to Wambui’s sisters, Shiru and Irene who have joined the home as official staff members. Shiru takes the position of Child Sponsorship Manager and Irene as Bookkeeper. Both have given much support to the home over the years and we we know they will do a wonderful job,

School Update
The end of term saw another round of excellent school results for the kids. They continue to improve from term to term with one third of the children being in the top bracket of each of their year levels.

During the school holidays in April, the kids spent their time helping out with the building,
taking music lessons from a local community member, and forming a choir. They even performed at the local church much to the local community's delight.

WE NEED YOU TO DIG DEEP!
We are drawing closer to having the building finished, and at this stage funding is critical. We need to raise 5.15 million KSH (AUD$60,500) over the next 6 months in order to finish the building by our deadline and have the kids moved and settled before Christmas.

The final stages of the building will be completed in 3 phases:

PHASE 1 (June/July)
- building the second floor walls

The cost estimate for Phase 1 is 1.75 million KSH (AUD$20,600). At present we have 1.1million KSH (AUD$13,000) so we need to raise an additional 650,000KSH (AUD$7,600) over the next 3-4 weeks.

PHASE 2 (August)
- fit the roof, windows and doors

The cost estimate for Phase 2 is 3.25 million KSH (AUD$38,200). We will need to raise the funds for this phase before the end of July in order to proceed with the building.

PHASE 3 (October)
- electricity and plumbing

The cost estimate for Phase 3 is 1.25 million KSH (AUD$14,700). We will need to raise the funds for this phase before the end of September in order to meet our deadline.

There are so many ways you can contribute and help to raise much needed funds. We urge you to dig deep and help out in any way you can, to make Familia Moja's dream become a reality.

Sponsorship Update
Education Sponsorship
At Familia Moja, we are committed to providing the best education possible for all of our children. At present we are in need of 7 more education sponsors. We see education as of the utmost importance and as a tool that not only provides the children with prospects for the future, but also with the ability to make educated choices about their lives and their communities.

If you would like to sponsor education for a child at Familia Moja, or find out more information, please click here.

Food and Shelter Sponsorship
The cost of living in Kenya continues to rise and the monthly budget is becoming higher and higher. Providing quality food and shelter for the children is our primary concern and we are always in need of food and shelter sponsorship.

The cost of food and shelter sponsorship for one child is AUD$96 per month ($24 per week).

If you would like to sponsor food and shelter for a child at Familia Moja, or find out more information, please click here.
