Group Volunteer Project: January 2013

GROUP VOLUNTEER PROJECT: JANUARY 2013

Familia Moja Children’s Home in Kenya, is now receiving applications for our second ever group volunteer program!

The volunteer project will commence in January 2013. Where volunteers will travel to Kenya and reside and work for one month on the development of a permanent home for the children of Familia Moja in the village of Mang’u.

WHAT IS FAMILIA MOJA?

Familia Moja Children’s Home is an orphanage that was founded by Kenyan woman Wambui Muiru, with the help of Jess White and James Woodward in September 2007. The Home is located in Mang’u, a rural village in Kenya approximately 65km from the capital, Nairobi.

Our aim is to provide a safe and secure home for the children of Kenya who have been orphaned by diseases such as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Read more about Familia Moja here www.familiamoja.org

PROJECT AIM

In December 2011, Familia Moja Children’s Home started building its own home. Over the past nine months we have worked with the local community to complete the structure of the home; the foundation, walls and the roof of the home will be finished in October.

The aim of the second group volunteer project is to help finish the home and set up activities around the home to help Familia Moja take those next steps towards becoming self-sustainable.

Volunteers will raise funds for locally sourced building materials and the wages of qualified local builders as well as assisting with building activities.

PROJECT DATES

The volunteer project runs for 4 weeks from the 7th of January to the 1st February 2013.

VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE

If a volunteer has prior building experience it's a bonus, however the aim of the project is to use local qualified builders to build the home, which will ensure the building is constructed safely and in accordance with local regulations and methods. Employing local builders means injecting funds into the local community and economy.

We are looking for committed volunteers who are passionate about helping children living in poverty. If you think that you can help our grassroots community-focussed organisation achieve its goal, than please consider joining our project.

As a volunteer you'll be living in rural Africa, within a different lifestyle and culture. It will be hot and sweaty work, but also the chance to be part of our organisation, have lots of fun, make friends, and have an experience you will never forget!

We hope volunteers will enjoy their time, and gain a holistic experience such that the volunteers will stay involved with Familia Moja long after they return home from Kenya.

WHAT TASKS WILL I BE DOING?

Depending on individual skills, volunteers will assist with a variety of tasks including:
  • Assisting with internal and external finishings; helping mix cement for rendering the walls and painting
  • Maintaining our vegetable garden and fruit trees at the current home
  • Assisting with the set-up of sustainable income generating projects for the orphanage i.e. a chicken coup and a green house.
  • Assisting with caring for the 35 children at Familia Moja e.g. cooking, cleaning, tuition and activities

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

Volunteers need to fundraise a minimum of AUD$2,500 to take part in the project, 100% of which goes directly to Familia Moja.

Monies will be used to buy building materials and to employ local qualified builders.

We will provide fundraising support (information, photos, fundraising ideas etc) to help you gather the required funds.

Volunteers will need to purchase their own flights to Kenya, pay for their own travel insurance, visa and any vaccinations required in addition to the fundraised monies.

The final expense for volunteers is AUD$300 for food and accommodation whilst volunteering on the project.

Note all volunteers are required to provide a working with children's police check.

WHEN DO I NEED TO CONFIRM MY INTEREST?

As soon as possible. The earlier you confirm your interest the easier it will be to fundraise the money to take part in the project.

Full payment of AUD$2,800 needs to be received no later than Monday the 3rd of December 2012.

If you are interested in joining this project, please contact Jess White on +61-431-997-025 or email info@familiamoja.org for further details on how you can become a part of this exciting volunteer project.
