Volunteer Story - Vicky Peterson

I spent 6 weeks volunteering at Familia for my final nursing elective placement. Not only were we able to become part of the amazing "familia" family , we also had opportunity to volunteer within the wider community. Wambui was fantastic at supporting us and facilitating other learning opportunites during our placement and her family were so welcoming and friendly.

The children at Familia Moja were awe- inspiring. I have never met individuals with such determination and perseverance and an amazing sense of fun. We hoped to share some of our skills, however the reality is that the children taught us far more.(unfortunately they never managed to improve my dancing skills!)

The whole experience was fantastic. We were able to participate in all aspects of the childrens lives from home life to school and even meeting some of their families.I feel privileged and honoured that the children and everyone else involved were so open and welcoming.

We were fortunate enough to attend the 4th Anniversary celebrations. It was a lot of fun and great to see so many people from the community supporting familia Moja and the work they do. The Familia kids stole the show with their performances.

Thank you Familia Moja for the laughs, the fun and the most amazing experience that I have ever had. I can't wait to do it all again with you one day!
